2014 LIWA Aquatics Annual Conference Awards

The 2014 Conference Dinner once again provided the opportunity for the Institute to recognise both individuals and organisations that have contributed to the development of our industry. The after dinner presentations were highlighted by the presence of the Mia Davies MLA, Minister for Water; Forestry; Deputy Leader of the National Party of Western Australia who has joined us again this year to present awards to our new WaterWise Aquatics Centres.
The opportunity to recognise our great industry contributors is an area in which LIWA Aquatics prides itself on and in some small way sets the scene for a fun night but also rewards endeavour in the aquatics industry. The first awards are to recognise longevity in our industry for 20 and 30 years of service which is a real milestone for an individual. This year 11 members were presented with awards of service by Life Member Michael Doyle these included: 20 Years 30 years Richard Duke  Bill Parker Eddie Gibbs David Moore  Elle Lee  Maurice Dhue  Cameron Wrathall  Neil Lavers  John Simmonds  Joanne Pdeley   Kim Johnson   The next awards were an opportunity for four facilities to be certified as Waterwise Aquatic Facilities. The program allows swimming pools and aquatic and leisure centres across the state to be recognised for their water saving efforts and achieve Waterwise Approved endorsement. The Board of LIWA Aquatics was very grateful that Minister Davies gave up her valuable time to present Awards to the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder, the City of Melville and the City of Canning. Waterwise Facility Representatives with Minisiter Davies To be endorsed, aquatic centres are required to demonstrate that water efficiency measures have been implemented, develop a water savings plan and carry out a facility audit to identify further water saving opportunities. Achieving Waterwise Approved endorsement shows the community and members that aquatic centres are taking an important step and doing their bit to save water in our drying climate. Well done to the four facilities who achieved Waterwise status over the past 12 months. LIWA Aquatics President Jeff Fondacaro then presented a number of awards culminating with his Presidents Award for Excellence. The first award was to recognise our Keynote Speaker, Dr Justin Sempsrott. Justin was presented with a small gift on behalf of the Members of LIWA Aquatics for giving up his time and travelling more than half way around the world to deliver 2 sessions at the conference. His sessions were riveting and delegates were impressed by his delivery and passion for our industry. Dr Justin Sempsrott and President Jeff The second award of the night was presented to Shenton Engineering to recognise their 40 year commitment to the aquatic industry and over 20 years direct support to this conference. Year after year Shenton Enterprises provide folders for our delegates, supply prizes and put on drinks each Tuesday afternoon to help delegates and committee members wind down after the conference. John Shenton was on hand to receive this well deserved award on behalf of the company. Tony and John The next award presented was to Elle Lee who was recognised with an industry service award. Elle travels the state delivering training and assessment in remote indigenous communities; she has operated pools in these communities and continues to provide Pool Lifeguard, Pool Operations and First Aid Training to our industry. We are blessed in WA because we have industry members and trainers such as Elle that have a passion for our industry. Elle The penultimate award presented this year was the most prestigious of all LIWA Aquatics awards with only 5 people previously recognised in our 45 years history. A Lifetime Achievement Award highlights a contribution to LIWA Aquatics that has enhanced the development of the Institute and developed the aquatic industry over many years. This year Alex McKenzie the CEO of Royal Life Saving was presented with his Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to LIWA Aquatics and the Aquatic Industry.Alex saw the potential of LIWA Aquatics but he also saw the importance of the two bodies working close together to achieve great things for our industry in this state and through Watch Around Water, across Australia. It is a sad fact that no other Australian states have established relationships like we have in Western Australia. We have wonderful support from Royal Life Saving and Alex has been instrumental in assisting LIWA Aquatics development over the past 20 years and he is a very worthy recipient of this award. Alex and Jeff The last award of the night was the President's Award for Excellence and is an award to recognise a member's commitment to the ethos of LIWA Aquatics. Over the past few years this award as been presented to one of our country members who display all the wonderful qualities you would expect from a LIWA Aquatics Aquatic Facility Manager. The Presidents citation for this award reads as follows:"I decided on the winner for this award in late October last year when I was able to spend some time and listen first hand to the passion, dedication and enthusiasm of this year's winner. To see the level of presentation of his facility, the safety measures in place through the use of Watch Around Water and the esteem in which he was held by his peers and the community made it an easy choice. This individual has played very important role in training and mentoring staff in the Wheatbelt, he has travelled to pools to assist when no manager was available and is a wonderful role model. He has even enticed is daughter into our industry as a pool manager and with his wife Megan having been a pool manager many years ago is a wonderful advocate for a career in Aquatics. The 2014 Presidents Awards Winner is Mr John Simmonds from the Shire of Merredin" Simmo watching over the Awards Unfortunately John was not able to joins us on the night but his daughter Maddy was with us to accept the award on his behalf. We will present the award first hand to John in Muckinbudin in October. Well done Simmo.
