challenge1On Friday the 27th November 2009 at 6:20am, a 53 year old patron fell unconscious and sank to the bottom of the outdoor 8 lane pool at Challenge Stadium, during swim training for the upcoming 2010 Rottnest Channel Swim.

Two of the casualty's fellow swimmers assisted the victim, from the water while the coach alerted aquatic staff to the incident.   The Challenge Stadium Lifeguard's, Jamie Brady and Alex Cory, assisted the victim in breathing after he was removed from the water semi-conscious.  Jamie and Alex worked swiftly to ensure Peter was prepared if he fell unconscious at any stage during his recovery.

Shortly after the patient went into cardiac arrest and aquatic staff, in conjunction with the St John Ambulance paramedics delivered a total of five (5) shocks to defibrillate his heart.   When the patron left Challenge Stadium he was conscious and talking with Paramedics.  He has since made a full recovery over the following week and was released from hospital on the 4th of December.  Congratulations to all staff who were involved in the aquatic emergency, it was the best possible outcome.

Jamie and Alex below recieving their award from the CEO of Wester Power  Mr Doug Aberle from  for their contribution to a life saved.
